Tularemia aka Rabbit Fever

Read it in the papers today and just found out that like the bird flu and mad cow diseases, rabbits have their own disease. Below is what happened to a woman in Thailand late last month.

Rabbit Fever Kills Woman in Thailand; Country’s First Fatality
By Suttinee Yuvejwattana

March 18 (Bloomberg) — Rabbit fever, which can cause skin and mouth ulcers and pneumonia, killed a woman in Thailand, marking the country’s first reported case of the disease.

The 37-year-old from Prachuab Kirikhan province, about 320 kilometers (200 miles) south of Bangkok, died late last month and the cause of her death was confirmed by laboratory tests in the U.S., said an official at the Public Health Ministry today. Rabbit fever, also known as tularemia, is caused by a bacterium found in animals, especially rabbits and hares, and is treated with antibiotics.

The woman kept rabbits at her house and also had cancer, which may have weakened her immune system, making her more prone to infection, Thawat Sutrajarn, director general of the Disease Control Department, told a state-owned radio station today.

“We will educate our doctors nationwide to be able to diagnose and cure this disease as this case is quite new in Thailand,” Thawat said.

Tularemia is endemic in many parts of the world, including North America, Eastern Europe, China, Japan and Scandinavia, according to the World Health Organization in Geneva.

Tularemia can be contracted through the bite of an infected tick, deerfly or other insect, handling infected animal carcasses or through inhaling the bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. It’s not known to spread from person to person.

Diagnosing tularemia is difficult because initial symptoms, which include fever, headache, diarrhea, body aches and dry cough, resemble other diseases, Thawat said.

Taken from Bloomberg

Tularemia (also known as “rabbit fever”) is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. The disease is endemic in North America, and parts of Europe and Asia. The primary vectors are ticks and deer flies, but the disease can also be spread through other arthropods. Animals such as rabbits, prairie dogs, hares and muskrats serve as reservoir hosts. The disease is named after Tulare County, California.

Treatments and prevention methods are available and the bacteria Francisella tularensis is regarded as a viable bioweapon agent, and it has been included in the biological warfare programs of the USA, USSR and Japan at various times.

Unbelievable when dinner becomes your best buddy. In this case of course it’s being the best bunny. Apparently the 4 month old eagle befriended his dinner, a little rabbit and so far they have been tight. The little fellow even help groom the eagle.
The owner of the eagle… thinks it does not know how to enjoy it’s meal though. Hope he don’t chop the bunny up and serve it instead. At BunnyFairy we hope all is well and ends well too.

Stomp The Yard

Not really dancing to the rhythm but we caught the little fellow thumping his feet on a public holiday the 10th January 2008. I just fed him his favorite food and went and worked on my computer. Just checking emails and stuff when I heard a strange noise. It came from Bit’s cage but when I looked over everything was normal. The food and water container are in place. The brat poised nicely in the center of the cage. Weird…

The sound came when I diverted my attention back to the monitor. And again I failed to notice anything out of place. But after 3-4 thumps I suspected that it was Bit Bit’s doing. So I watched. For a full minute or two nothing happened. Then suddenly in lightning quick speed he lifted his hind legs an inch plus off the platform and landed back again with a loud thump. Ok he definitely got my full attention.

It was his first time doing it and I was worried that he was scared of something. Read that when rabbits does that, they are either afraid or angry. And being the “prey” animals that they are… it might affect him a lot and might even cause heart attack. I checked around and did not detect any cats or things that would scare him so I believe it was the latter. Perhaps we were not paying enough attention to him for rabbits need lots of love and attention and Bit Bit is sure a sucker for that. Woke gf up and she managed to record a short clip of him in stomping action.

Played with him a little bit more and left him run around the house… it stopped. Guess he enjoys controlling us instead. Lil’ bugger. Does your rabbit thump his/her foot often?

Rabbit by Run Wrake

First and foremost be warned that this is not your everyday cute and adorable elements at work here. And there is definitely no happy ending here. Watch if only you could appreciate the storytelling style and the message being conveyed. Rabbit is a dark animated short film by Run Wrake.

Rabbit - Run Wrake

A synopsis of the Rabbit, found on RES.com site.

Rabbit relates a moral tale with a subversive, macabre tone achieved through black humor and graceful menace. The story takes place in a seemingly idyllic English countryside complete with portentous cloudscapes and bleating farm animals, all based on those helpful stickers. A boy and girl capture a rabbit, slice it in half, and discover a magical monster inside. The snarling, strangely endearing creature runs amok in their house, zapping bothersome insects, which turn into jewels, bottles of ink or feathers. The conniving children quickly realize their new pet’s earning potential and exploit it by butchering local farm animals to attract swarms of flies and wasps. As in all good fairytales, the children get their comeuppance and meet a gruesome end.

Undeniably, Run Wrake’s storytelling style is definitely different and the meaning obscure at least to the ignorant ones. In Run’s own words:

“The images in Rabbit hark back to a time when it didn’t seem so important to be greedy. To have a massive house and a big income and bling and all this stuff that seems to be seen as a positive thing now. We admire people who are ostentatious with their wealth and we all seem to aspire to it. Clearly it doesn’t make you happy, so why? Nobody seems to know what to do any more. The past always seems a bit more rosy, but it genuinely did seem to be a simpler time where simpler values were admired. It’s a very unfashionable thing to say, but I think it’s worth thinking about.”

It started with a rabbit and it ended with a rabbit.

Blue Bunny Ice Creams

Posted on January 7, 2008 - Filed Under Product

No no. It’s not ice creams shaped like bunnies. But it’s an ice cream brand from the US and A. And to pinpoint the exact location it would have to be in Le Mars, Iowa: The Ice Cream Capital of the World. More ice cream is made in Le Mars than any other place on the planet! Yup taken directly out of the BLUE BUNNY® About Us section.

And further digging reveals to us that the name actually came from a contest held by the Well’s brothers. The winner, a Sioux City resident got the idea when he saw how his son enjoyed the blue bunnies in a departmental store during easter. History aside and let us enjoy the mouth watering images on their website.

None of us, BitBit included have ever tasted BLUE BUNNY® products but from the images served on the website, we are definitely welcoming it wholeheartedly if we can find any here in Malaysia. Any kind souls have seen it here, please do drop us a message. Would love to lap up some delicious dairy.
Bliss at BLUE BUNNY®
We know it’s good because it’s on FimeLime’s to die for list, sort of.

Tuzki - Bunny Icons

Posted on December 26, 2007 - Filed Under Media

You see it everywhere from MSN chat windows to blogs. But do you know where do these cute rabbit icons come from? Who made them? And why? I have been wondering who made them for ages because it’s nicely drawn and animated. The expressions on the little ones are captivating. For those of you who are clueless about this, here’s the 39 tuzkis.

These are the works of Wang Momo, a student in animation department of Beijing Broadcasting Institute created this popular lagomorph.

Here’s an excerpt taken from an article on Shanghaiist.
Wang stated that she created this character to be able to write her diary in a graphic form. Her friends and classmates always nicknamed her “rabbit” as well. The first Tuzki was very simple, and just waved his arms and shook his head. Then she created more pictures and small animations for this character based on her real life experiences. To date, Tuzki has 39 different expressions. And thanks to the 150,000,000 Tecent QQ users and 20 million MSN messenger users in China, the popularity of Tuzki also generates income for this young woman. She is now designing Tuzki posters and postcards, which will take the rabbit beyond the definition of an internet idol.

Check out Ms. Wang’s personal blog. Loads to see and goodies to download. It’s purely in Chinese though. And though I don’t understand much, my random clicking around brought me to good stuff. Go explore and enjoy the stuff she puts up. She has a regular comic strip starring none other than tuzki too.

UPDATE
Wow… the response towards these cute little things are huge. So to make downloads easier, I have already uploaded them to Bunnyfairy’s server. Download them here people and thanks for visiting! I have been neglecting this blog for a long time and now I might start blogging on bunnies again. Enjoy!

BitBit’s Turf Crash

Posted on December 19, 2007 - Filed Under BitBit

Here’s photos of BitBit posing and nosing around Crumb’s and Casper’s home ground. He gets to explore around the place when Casper gets locked in his cage. With Casper out of the way, the little fellow would bravely confront them and make the dogs go crazy. I think he secretly enjoys seeing them barking madly and gets reprimanded for it. I can’t help but notice that arrogant smirk on his bunny face.

This is my favourite shot! Blek…

His fur biting problem is getting more and more serious. We put powder and still he bites. Sigh.
